IT'S BEEN A LONG ROAD
What started as a part-time job my first year of university became my full-time job after university and - somehow along the way - turned into my own business.
I'M JENN, BTW.
HERE'S WHAT I DO TODAY
When I'm not at a hockey rink, soccer field or swimming pool with one of my 3 kids, I help students from elementary to grad school learn how to think, read, and write with clarity - so they excel both in and outside of the classroom.

AND HERE'S WHAT I'VE SEEN OVER AND OVER
Students don't struggle with writing because they're bad writers. They struggle because they don't have direction before they start - and no one has taught them how to read to write. And - if you've ever written an essay - I'm sure you get it. Essays are much easier to read than they are to write.

You don't need to read more.
- AND -
You don't need to write more.
YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO IN BETWEEN.
That's the part most students are never taught.
And that's what I teach.
MY RESUME IN A NUTSHELL
over 25 years working with students as a tutor and academic writing instructor
received a scholarship to grad school and earned my MA in English Literature
lead a team of tutors at a Toronto-based learning centre
started my own business 15 years ago after having my first child - the original plan was to be a stay-at-home-mom
helped hundreds of students move from feeling stuck and overwhelmed to writing with clarity and confidence
THE BACKSTORY
[ abridged version ]
I'M THE STUDENT WHO BECAME THE TEACHER
Teaching has always come naturally to me. Writing? Not so much.
In my early university years, I struggled with writing - a lot.
I thought writing meant understanding what I read, summarizing ideas, and trying to sound "smart."
But I didn't know how to think through what I was reading - or how to start in a way that actually led somewhere.
Everything changed when I learned how to:
-
slow down my thinking
-
start the right way
-
ask better questions
-
read for my own reasons
-
trust myself to say something
-
read for my own reasons
THAT'S WHEN WRITING FINALLY STARTED TO MAKE SENSE.
AND - WHY I LOVE TEACHING IT.
MOST WRITING HELP
FOCUSES ON THE WORDS - WHICH
DOESN'T HELP AT ALL
Most writing advice focuses on what ends up on the page.
I focus on everything that happens before, in between and after the words hit the paper.
Because...
CLEAR THINKING = CLEAR WRITING
BUT I SHOULD TELL YOU
THIS ISN'T JUST ABOUT ESSAYS.
Essays (usually) end after you finish school. But, learning how to think clearly, communicate effectively and make sense of ideas in a way that actually reflects you?
THAT NEVER ENDS.
And that's why I don't preach "just grades," offer "easy fixes" or give "quick hacks."
Writing skills are life skills.
